Todays Green news

The Green Party has fielded candidates across England and Wales for the upcoming European elections, including outgoing Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Magid Magid, and Gina Dowding, a prominent anti-fracking campaigner and councillor in Lancashire.

The Green Party of England and Wales has announced its list of candidates for the European elections. Voters in the UK will go to the polls on Thursday 23 May to elect 73 MEPs across 11 electoral regions (nine in England, one for Scotland and one for Wales – there is a separate system in Northern Ireland). Each region has between three and 10 MEPs representing it. All parties submit a list of candidates for each region, and the electorate then votes not for candidates but for parties. The Green Party has fielded candidates in all nine English regions and Wales (65 in total). A number of significant figures in the party are standing to become MEPs, including the popular Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Magid Magid, who rose to fame for banning Donald Trump from the city, and Molly Scott Cato, current MEP for the South West and ardent Remain campaigner, who launched the Brexit Syndicate project to shine a light on the wealthy players behind the scenes of Brexit. Other candidates include anti-fracking campaigner Gina Dowding, Bristol’s Lord Mayor Cleo Lake, Lambeth councillor Scott Ainslie and Alex Phillips, the Deputy Mayor of Brighton and Hove. The full list can be found at the bottom of this article.
